The Holy Spirit and Prayer

Day 9 - March 15

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. —Romans 8:26

I grew up in a church where we tended to do the same thing the same way every Sunday, regardless of what happened. I’m sure that I was not in tune to the work of the Holy Spirit in those days, and I did not listen as I should have. But I have since learned that creativity is essential. Creativity keeps the congregation aware that there are opportunities to pray in different ways, and there are opportunities for us to learn to pray together better.

One of the things that I have learned about the Korean Church is that they get up at 5:00 a.m. and they pray for hours. According to many Korean pastors, their groups pray together silently for a long time, asking God to teach them how to pray, before they actually start praying, They ask God to give them the words to say, to fill them with the Holy Spirit so that they would pray in accordance with God’s will.

Do we ever take time to ask God to teach us to pray? Do we tell God that we are inadequate and we don’t understand what prayer is, but we would ask Him to reveal it to us through the Holy Spirit?

Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you the words to pray as you ought, according to God’s will.
